Gerry L. Sotomayor, M.D.

Dear Senator Shafer:

I write to offer my strong support for your Senate Bill 148, the Saving the Cure Act, encouraging umbilical cord donation and non-destructive stem cell research.

You know of my special interest in umbilical cord reserach. I organized the Babies for Life foundation in 2001 to encourage the universal donation of postnatal tissue, and I am honored to serve as a member of Governor Perdue’s Commission for Umbilical Cord Blood Research and Treatment.

Your legislation is vitally needed. It is tragic that the umbilical cord and other postnatal tissues are routinely thrown away after babies are born. The umbilical cord is rich in stem cells that can be used for medical research and treatment without risk to either mother or newborn baby.

Senate Bill 148 advances vital medical research in an ethically responsible fashion. It wisely avoids the scientific and ethical pitfalls of embryonic stem cell research. It furthers the work of Governor Perdue’s commission.

I appreciate your sponsorsip of the bill and your leadership in this important effort. Please let me know how I can help you.

Very truly yours,

Gerry L. Sotomayor, M.D.
